Position Summary

The Medical Assistant I's role is to assure smooth clinical flow and assist healthcare clinicians and front office staff in providing medical services to participants. The Medical Assistant I acts as a liaison between healthcare clinicians, participants, and families.

Reportability

This position reports to the assigned nurse for all administrative functions. Medical assistants work under the license of the assigned medical provider for clinical functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



  • Acts as a member of the care team to support co-workers and ensure patient needs are met.
  • Participates in daily huddles.
  • Performs and documents screening procedures for completion of health evaluations, e.g. laboratory tests, hearing and vision testing, growth charts, head circumference, height, weight, and vital signs.
  • Rooms patients in a timely manner and facilitates clinic flow and patient care by problem-solving with on-site team.
  • Performs laboratory tests and/or phlebotomy as ordered by provider.
  • Prepares lab specimens and forms for transport.
  • Administers vaccine and injections under medical supervision, per provider order.
  • Provides medical education and discharge instructions to patients per order of the medical clinician.
  • Assists nurse manager in the ordering of supplies, vaccines, and equipment.
  • Conducts pre-visit chart review or planning.
  • Cleans lab and patient rooms daily.
  • Stocks exam rooms daily.
  • Follows-up on missed appointments and contacts patients per order of medical clinicians.
  • Checks functioning and cleans or sterilizes equipment as needed.
  • Facilitates communication between provider and patient as needed.
  • Complies with operational procedures & requirements (such as HIPAA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and agency mandates).
  • Assists with inventory and storage of supplies.
  • Schedules patient appointments as needed.
  • Performs other duties as necessary and may rotate to other sites as determined by immediate supervisor.
  • Collaborates across disciplines to facilitate warm hand-offs.
  • Follows standing orders per clinical guidelines.
  • Documents in eCW.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities -



  • Minimum of High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Preferred, but not required one (1) year of experience in direct patient care and/or medical assistant certification or registration.
  • Experience may substitute for medical assistant certification. Experience working in community health care setting preferable. Bilingual in English and Spanish and/or other languages preferred.
  • A thorough understanding and working knowledge of patient confidentiality issues and HIPAA compliance/regulations is essential.


Language Requirements - Ability to communicate effectively in English is required. Additional language proficiency or fluency in Spanish and/or other languages preferred.

Physical Demands - Regularly required to sit; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear; must be able to lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Work Environment - Mostly in a typical medical office setting with quiet to moderate noise level. May be exposed to potentially hazardous blood-borne/respiratory pathogens and bodily fluid. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, and humidity due to outside weather conditions. May work a hybrid schedule - remotely & onsite, as needed.
