Works under general direction to provide athletic trainer skills for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required
  • Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelors of Science Degree in sports medicine or athletic training.
Preferred
  • Experience

  • 1 year working with sports teams and/or in an outpatient clinic preferred, including experience applying and removing casts, splints, and braces preferred.

JOB DUTIES
  • Escort and/or transport patients to treatment rooms or other areas as directed.
  • Examine and treat injuries or conditions; prevent, diagnose and provide intervention on and off campus for emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities.
  • Provide patient education to prevent injury or re-injury and reduce rehabilitative and other health care costs; take patient's medical history, assess patient and report findings to physicians.
  • Recommend exercises and special diets and order equipment and supplies.
  • Provide/apply treatments for chronic and minor injuries such as ice and hot packs; call physicians for injured persons as required.
  • Document completion of patient care tasks in medical records and reinforces education provided by the physician or nurse seeking assistance from the nurse or physician as appropriate.
  • Confirm appropriate patient consent and authorization forms are signed for research and medical treatment.
  • Apply, adjust and remove casts; instructs patient in proper care of cast; wraps ankles, fingers and wrists to support muscles and ligaments; remove sutures, staples, Steinman pins and K-wires; provide wound care including dressing changes.
  • Assist orthopaedic surgeon in reduction of fractures; measure and fit patients for braces and other orthopaedic devices.
  • Write standard admitting and pre-op instructions for patients having surgery; instruct patient in pre and post-operative care.
  • Provide education at outreach programs.
  • May assist in the operating room as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
