JOB SUMMARY
Works under general direction to perform professional level medical or scientific research assignments related to particular or specialized field of endeavor.

This position will help establish a research program focused on the dynamic mechanisms of cytosolic and mitochondrial translation using biochemical, single-molecule fluorescence biophysical, cryo-EM, and/or genetics methods; and, independently lead research projects that contribute to the overall goals of the group and result in first-author publications. Secondary responsibilities include mentoring graduate students and research technicians, and contributing positively to the lab community and intellectual environment. Will perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred experience/skills:



  • At least one published first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • A strong foundation in hypothesis-driven, basic research.
  • Experience with biochemical, structural, biophysical, or cell biology approaches.
  • Familiar with MATLAB programming is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A meticulous attention to detail and record keeping.
  • Independently motivated to think, plan, conduct, and analyze experiments.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    Master's Degree with major coursework in field of assignment. and
    Bachelor's Degree with major coursework in field of assignment.


  • Experience
    3 years of laboratory experience with Master's degree. and 2 years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent. or
    4 years of laboratory experience with Bachelor's degree. and 2 years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.


JOB DUTIES




    • Recommends and/or initiates new or modified procedures and techniques based upon latest developments in assigned field or analysis of research data.
    • Performs computer programming for accumulation and analysis of research data.
    • Designs, constructs, repairs, or modifies electronic and/or mechanical equipment or apparatus used in experiments and research projects.
    • Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, or other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.
    • Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in writing of reports and papers for publication.
    • May provide working supervision to employees of lower grade engaged in performance of variety of difficult and complex laboratory work tasks.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
