Spectra Tech Inc. is in need of a Mechanical Engineer Level 1 or 2 for a position in Los Alamos, NM.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The city is a top spot for outdoor enthusiasts as it has more than 120 hiking and biking trails, and residents enjoy easy access to the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area. Thanks to the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos' presence in the area, Los Alamos also has a college-town vibe that's a major draw for young professionals, families and retirees.

Position Summary:

The Engineering organization has openings for a variety of engineering disciplines to support facility operations, maintenance, and new facility projects through design, construction, and commissioning. This position is for an early career Mechanical Engineer that will be part of a multi-discipline engineering organization providing engineering services in full compliance with our company Engineering Standards, Procedures, and relevant codes and standards. The position will support engineering design, fabrication, construction, inspections, and acceptance for the facilities, systems, and components. Experience in engineering aspects for design and maintenance of the following types of systems are preferred, but not required:



  • Control systems
  • Pressurized fluid systems
  • Nuclear ventilation systems
  • Mobile Equipment
  • Well Drilling
  • Code Welding


While working to achieve the company's objectives, the Mechanical Engineer will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner; will maintaining required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):



  • Provide day-to-day engineering support to operations, maintenance, and project management organizations.
  • Provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of limited scope and complexity.
  • Contribute to completion of milestones associated with specific projects.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines, organizations, and customers in completion of assigned tasks.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations for design packages.
  • Develop maintenance requirements for systems and equipment.
  • Assess compliance of existing systems and identify corrective actions.
  • Establish quality assurance requirements for material procurements.
  • Perform field walk downs of existing structures and systems to develop accurate as-built documentation.
  • Implement the company's Conduct of Engineering Program
  • Utilize strong ethics and conduct of operations principles to ensure fully compliant engineering deliverables.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

Level 1:



  • Basic understanding of the use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Basic understanding of engineered systems and component maintenance requirements
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles, concepts and techniques in engineering.
  • Skill and ability to perform assigned engineering tasks under general supervision and guidance.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with project stakeholders and other customers.


Level 2:



  • Frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Moderate understanding of engineered systems and component maintenance requirements
  • Understanding in the application of national codes and standards such as ASME, ANSI, ASHRAE, AWS, ISA, DOE O 420.1C, etc.
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles, concepts and techniques in engineering.
  • Skill and ability to perform assigned engineering tasks under general supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to organize own work independently in order to meet established objectives.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with project stakeholders and other customers.



Education and Experience Required:

Level 1: Bachelors' of Science degree in Mechanical or other engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university.

Level 2: Bachelors' of Science degree in Mechanical or other engineering discipline from an ABET university. A two (2) years of experience as a mechanical engineer. At least 1 year of nuclear experience preferred, but not required.

Business Associations:

Level 1: Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor, project leaders, and other professionals in the section or group.

Level 2: Primarily internal company contacts, infrequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters.

Impact:

Level 1: Contributes to completion of routine technical tasks. Failure to achieve results can normally be overcome without serious effect on schedules and programs.

Level 2: Contributes to completion of milestones associated with specific projects. Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause delays in program schedules and may result in allocation of additional resources.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Will perform field walkdowns of facilities and systems. Site work may involve exposure to typical industrial hazards and controlled radiological environments. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline.
