About the Job
The Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Initiatives team is part of the Office of Curriculum Internationalization of the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance at the University of Minnesota (UMN). The Associate Director of COIL Initiatives provides leadership and technical and managerial support for multiple curricular, administrative, and auxiliary programs. This position works under general supervision of the Director of COIL Initiatives, but has the discretion to make daily operational decisions, recommend capital and process improvements, and initiate new programs and partnerships. As a critical member of the leadership team, the Associate Director works with the Director to foster equitable and productive international partnerships and to implement, manage, develop, coordinate, and integrate COIL and virtual exchange across undergraduate, graduate, staff, and faculty programs for all five UMN system campuses and external audiences. The Associate Director works with the Director, faculty, institutional leadership, and international partners to design, implement, and sustain high-impact COIL programming, while assessing and maintaining alignment with institutional goals and global engagement priorities. The Associate Director position requires a high degree of technical expertise in the design and use of digital education, communication, collaboration, and data management technologies for international and multilingual knowledge exchange and production. The position demands strong linguistic, organizational, intercultural communication, computational, instructional design, media creation, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups and stakeholders to solve complex problems. The Associate Director is responsible for processes related to workflow management and collaborates with others to bring about integrative solutions that sustain effective COIL programming.
Responsibilities: 30% Program Development and Administration Support and contribute to leadership in the development, coordination, and administration of the University of Minnesota COIL programs, including revenue-generating initiatives, while assessing and maintaining alignment with institutional goals and global engagement priorities. Analyze trends in international online collaboration and COIL methodologies to modify program offerings and improve processes and effectiveness. Identify new opportunities for COIL growth within the University and through revenue-generating programs. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and international partners to develop innovative program offerings. Proactively work to reduce institutional barriers that hinder faculty and student participation in COIL programs. Develop and implement efficient, effective workflow policies and procedures in collaboration with the Director, members of the Office of Curriculum Internationalization, and other relevant units. Works with the assistant director to assist with managing relationships and negotiations with external partners, administer service agreements, liaise with other university departments, and contribute to supervision of work provided by external consultants. Coordinate enrollment and participation processes for COIL programs, ensuring accuracy and timely communication for all stakeholders. Provide expert consultation to University of Minnesota faculty, staff, and external audiences to ensure effective integration of COIL into curricula. Leverage data management and communication tools to track program performance, store data securely, and ensure compliance with international, federal, state, and institutional standards.
30% Faculty and Staff Support and Training Provide instructional design and technical support for all COIL initiatives and to the Office of Curriculum Internationalization, as needed. Provides Spanish translation and interpretation support for all COIL programming and the Office of Curriculum Internationalization, as needed. Provide direct support and coaching to faculty participating in COIL initiatives, in English and Spanish, including guidance with course design, cross-cultural communication and collaboration strategies, and the use of digital information and communication technologies for international, multilingual knowledge exchange and production. Consult with and guide staff supporting COIL initiatives, in English and Spanish, including methods for recruiting, matching, and training COIL faculty; initiating and sustaining COIL partnerships; interdisciplinary collaboration; and integrating COIL into the institution's strategic plan. Facilitate experiential workshops in English and Spanish for faculty and on diverse approaches to COIL design and facilitation. Collaborate with University of Minnesota academic units to address faculty and staff concerns and challenges. Manage and coordinate participant feedback, evaluation, and continuous improvement processes for COIL initiatives. Provide help resolving issues related to faculty effectiveness, student participation, partnership equity, and program implementation.
25% Promotion and Engagement Collaborate with faculty, international partners, and institutional leadership to develop and implement strategies to enhance visibility and participation in COIL programming. Develop and implement recruitment strategies to engage a wide range of faculty and students in COIL programs across the undergraduate and graduate curriculum with all five University of Minnesota System campuses and external audiences. Collaborate with communications teams to develop promotional materials for web, social media, print, and other platforms to highlight COIL programs. Utilize technology platforms for marketing, outreach, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that digital tools are maximized for global collaboration and communication. Attend and represent COIL initiatives at relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development events, building partnerships and promoting program growth.
15% Professional Development and Service Participate in conferences, symposia, workshops and other opportunities to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the COIL, virtual exchange, global education, and online learning fields, and the professional development related to these fields. Serve on institutional committees related to COIL, global education, and international partnerships, as appropriate. Promote, support, and contribute to institutional internationalization efforts. Share best practices for COIL implementation with other institutions and professional associations, leveraging technology to facilitate knowledge exchange and production.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: BA/BS in educational technology, information technology management, instructional design, or a related field and 3 or more years of related professional experience or a Master's degree in educational technology, information technology management, instructional design, or a related field and proven ability to perform the job functions. Strong background in online instructional design and pedagogical approaches for Universal Design for Learning, preferably with a focus on COIL and virtual exchange in higher education institutions Knowledge of international principles of data privacy and protection, including FERPA and GDPR Proficiency in managing large datasets, using productivity and data management software Proven experience overseeing negotiations with external international partners and managing partnerships effectively Experience managing revenue-generating professional development programs for international audiences in higher education settings and in the context of larger development efforts Demonstrated intercultural communication skills Demonstrated capacity to work across differing institutional structures in higher education internationally High degree of proficiency in English and Spanish Experience with international student recruitment and engagement strategies Ability to work collaboratively with diverse audiences, including faculty, students, and institutional partners at various leadership levels Expertise in leveraging communication and collaboration technology to enhance program development, faculty engagement, and student participation Commitment to and demonstrated capacity for incorporating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion principles into all aspects of program support and outcomes Proven ability to foster positive, collaborative relationships at all levels of the organization Experience in creating and implementing programming designed for strategic revenue generation Willingness and ability to travel as needed
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a leadership role Experience in evaluating and assessing program outcomes and impact using data analytics and reporting tools Familiarity with working in large, decentralized institutions or organizations Experience working with diverse groups in internationalization and international education efforts Skill in working across diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, and religious cultures and backgrounds Proven skill in negotiating across diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, and religious cultures and backgrounds Recipient of award and recognition for work internationalization and international education Formal training by recognized national organizations in international education and internationalization Experience studying and/or working in other countries

The Office of Curriculum Internationalization works with faculty, staff, and departments to design international, intercultural, and global learning experiences that prepare all students to address complex local and global challenges in a multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural world. The Curriculum Internationalization team offers professional development and consulting to faculty, staff, and departments on all five University of Minnesota system campuses. Pay and Benefits
