In this dynamic position, you will leverage market insights to make day-ahead and short-term trading decisions, optimizing APS resources for maximum benefit. You'll be responsible for analyzing market conditions to buy, sell, or generate energy, ensuring cost-effective solutions while adhering to regulatory and reliability standards.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Market Analysis & Decision Making: Analyze day-ahead and short-term market conditions to secure the most economical energy sources for APS customers.
  • Resource Optimization: Position APS resources to gain optimal benefits from regional markets, making strategic decisions about buying, generating, and selling energy.
  • Trading & Compliance: Execute trading activities in compliance with all regulatory and reliability standards and protocols.
  • Gas & Power Transactions: Buy and sell natural gas as needed, manage gas storage, and support traders in identifying arbitrage opportunities.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Power Market Schedulers to implement day-ahead and short-term plans for efficient operations.

Minimum Requirements

Short-Term Trader, Associate | Term Trading



  • BS/BA degree in business, economics, engineering or related field
  • AND three (3) years related experience in power trading , or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Qualified on all day ahead and short-term activities within one (1) year of hire, as well as M&T University or previously qualified with equivalent experience.



Short-Term Trader | Term Trading



  • BS/BA degree in business, economics, engineering or related field
  • AND five (5) years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Qualified on all day ahead and short-term activities within one (1) year of hire, as well as M&T University or previously qualified with equivalent experience.



Minimum Requirements



  • College level algebra.
  • Working knowledge of APS contracts concerning economy interchange, unit commitment, wheeling, wholesale and purchase power.
  • Basic knowledge of principles of economic dispatch and commitment of generating units, of the functional and economic characteristics of APS power resources and interconnected system, and of production costing software and modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to make analytical decisions utilizing mathematical skills.
  • Ability to utilize a computer and associated data bases, software, hardware.
  • Proven negotiating skills.

Major Accountabilities

1) Develops daily plans to provide a reliable supply of natural gas for the operation of the company's generating units. Manage pipeline imbalance, minimize the probability of pipeline penalties, and support the operation of the generation fleet at the least cost factoring in system load forecast, anticipated market participation, and natural gas pipeline status.

2) Negotiates and transacts on a daily basis (for periods of up to 30 days) the price and quantity natural gas as well as sales and purchases of power, energy, and transmission between the company and interconnected utilities and marketers. Establish and maintain credibility with the power markets in the western United States.

3) Support the APS fleet for unanticipated repairs so that the APS natural gas plan supports the outage schedules.

4) Produce reports such as the APS Morning Report and the Monthly Sales Report for distribution at the CEO and Director level.

5) Develop the ability to act as operating agent for various jointly-owned power plants and switchyards to maintain accurate scheduling and control.

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.

*Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).

*Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
