The Code Enforcement Aide position is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure working for local government and provides an opportunity to improve the quality of our neighborhoods. The entry level position is ideal for a candidate looking to get exposure to local government and, more specifically, the functions of the Community Development Department. An ideal candidate would have strong customer service skills, experience working with a diverse workforce, the ability to function in a fast-paced environment and represent the City of Peoria to the public in a professional manner. The position performs inspections, investigations and resolves violations of the City environmental codes, thereby providing safe and sanitary neighborhoods for the residents of the City. The position is responsible for case management of environmental violations to include: issuing work orders to remediate the violations, issuing citations, representing the City in the Administrative Hearing Officer process and other work as assigned. The Code Enforcement Division is looking for candidates who are willing to work hard and provide excellent customer service.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
Routine and special inspections of grounds, lots, alleys, sanitary and abandoned vehicles; and fire prevention conditions to assure that they are in accordance with City codes; and assisting in counseling services to owners regarding code violations or deficiencies.
Inspects properties on a routine and pro-active schedule or in response to complaints; examines and investigates the area for the existence of conditions which are in violation of City codes and may be dangerous to the health and safety of occupants.
Inspects private and public lands for heavy weed growth, illegal dumping activities and litter.
Prepares inspection reports and notices of violations to inform owners of deficiencies and establishes time limits for compliance.
Assists in counseling and advising owners of remedial or corrective action necessary to correct violations in order to bring lots into code compliance.
Conducts follow-up inspections to ascertain if violations have been corrected; may attend court sessions and provides testimony as needed.
Works closely with other inspection personnel.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED; and experience in public contact work in a service organization including some experience in environmental inspection. Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, considered.

City codes concerning garbage, weeds, litter, abandoned vehicles and related laws and ordinances.
