Laboratory Shift Leader - 3rd Shift
Basic Function
Oversees technical-based tasks and laboratory analyses conducted with established protocols and SOPs. May perform laboratory analyses, as needed. Supervises and directs the work of lower-level staff. Reviews laboratory data for accuracy. Prepares, reviews, and delivers client reports.
Nature and Scope
The Shift Leader reports administratively to a Senior Shift Leader or Laboratory Manager and serves as a shift supervisor. Directs work by assigning responsibilities and tasks to others. Helps ensure that staff members have the necessary resources and authority to accomplish assigned tasks. Assists in facilitating the professional growth of others through on-the-job training and the development of enhanced skills related to their current job. Provides timely feedback to staff on performance. Participates in the evaluation of staff and identification of their needs. Writes or contributes to writing monthly and final reports. May communicate directly with clients to assess their needs and develop beneficial relationships with their organizations.
Principal Accountabilities
Financial accountabilities:
- Demonstrates broad practical knowledge and understanding of the nature and operation of the contract research business.
- Understands MRI's structure, its administrative and technical operating procedures, decision-making processes, and financial budgeting/control systems.
- Demonstrates financial responsibility by efficient use of resources. Oversees and approves the ordering of supplies. Recognizes and makes recommendations with regard to staffing needs and schedules.
Client accountabilities:
- Understands that all activities conducted on a project influence client satisfaction and future work.
- Identifies potential problems that may affect MRI or client project work and informs Senior Shift Leader, and Section or Laboratory Managers; aids in troubleshooting problems.
- May communicate directly with clients to assess their needs and develop beneficial relationships within their organizations. Conducts all interactions with clients and their designees in a professional manner while maintaining appropriate security and confidentiality concerns
- Prepares and issues accurate reports in accordance with deadlines and report formats established with individual clients.
Internal Process accountabilities:
- Understands MRI administrative operations and how to coordinate with administrative staff members to get projectrelated work accomplished.
- Demonstrates some understanding of MRI's technical operations, including the division, section, and group structures. Understands how the Shift Leader position fits into the division and section organization and the reporting structure.
- Knowledgeable of all technical procedures and SOPs required for accomplishing project tasks.
- May perform technical-based tasks and laboratory analysis using established protocols and SOP's.
- Reviews experimental data for completeness and accuracy according to standard procedures; ensures all criteria and specifications have been met and assigns qualitative results of data. Notes unusual results and reports them to the Laboratory or Section Manager. Ensures accurate computer (LIMS) entry and completeness.
- May write or contribute to writing monthly reports.
- May develop or revise protocols and SOPs. Monitors staff for compliance with all SOPs and quality assurance requirements.
- Provides or arranges specific technical training necessary for staff to accomplish tasks
- Takes the initiative and shares decision-making and other responsibilities with others.
- Interacts collaboratively with team members to accomplish project, division and Institute level goals and resolve problems.
People accountabilities:
- Works effectively with other MRI personnel outside the line of formal authority (e.g., peers in other business units, senior management) to accomplish goals and resolve problems.
- Promote and encourage effective and meaningful communication between staff and managers. Also, promote meaningful inter-shift communication.
- Projects a positive, professional image of MRI in business and social interactions.
Management accountabilities:
- Facilitates the professional growth of others through the development of enhanced skills related to their current job. Provides timely feedback on performance. Assists in setting goals for lower-level staff.
- Helps new team members become assimilated into the workgroup and understand work procedures.
- Ensures that technical staff follows QA, Safety, and Security regulations
- Oversees, distributes, and balances workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level, and/or occupational specialization; ensures work is completed in a timely manner.
Success Factors
- Demonstrated success with technical capabilities in a laboratory environment, preferably with specific knowledge of CBRN detection technologies including the use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
- Experience and technical knowledge to support quality assurance activities including the development of SOPs, risk assessments, Corrective and Preventive Action Plans (CAPAs)
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with technical staff at all levels in a team-based environment.
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Proficient PC skills and ability to learn new software and systems
- Leadership abilities with strong problemsolving aptitude
- Good time management skills, ability to work under pressure and multi-task
- Well-organized and methodical, yet flexible to changing priorities
- Ability to identify potential problems and opportunities affecting MRI or client work
- Willing to work evenings, holidays, and weekends as needed
- Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in specified study area or equivalent in experience; or
- M.S. in a specified study area plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or
- B.S. in a specified study area plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
- Work 3rd shift, Saturday-Wednesday, 11:00 pm-8:00 am
- Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
- Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite to meet the government security investigation requirements.
Salary Range: $79,500 - $86,500, plus a 10% differential
The salary range is intended as a general guideline and is not a guaranteed offer, as compensation depends on various factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate qualifications, experience, internal equity, and market conditions.
