Overview Job Summary Conducts internal and criminal investigations. Creates, delivers, and implements law enforcement and security training programs (both departmental and System wide) and other specific duties and responsibilities in the Security Department. Assists leadership with the activities of assigned personnel in the performance of their duties to ensure the safety and security of the hospital employees, patients, visitors, and property through the preservation of peace and order, the prevention, detection, and protection of persons and property, and the performance of other tasks relating to the welfare and safety of Atrium Health. Essential Functions
- Fosters the professional development of assigned personnel by observing work, tracking performance indicators, answering questions, explaining proper procedures, demonstrating techniques, and intervening as warranted to correct deficiencies or help resolve problems.
- Coordinates, prepares and delivers all mandated North Carolina Criminal Justice training to all Atrium Health Special Police Officers in accordance with state law and criminal justice standards. Serves in the role as the designated In-Service Training coordinator for Atrium Health Special Police through the North Carolina Department of Justice.
- Maintains departmental access to, and manages law enforcement restricted databases, handles security sensitive and law enforcement restricted information
- Maintains advanced knowledge of and applies federal, state and local criminal statutes and case law
- Conducts background investigations on all Special Police Officers and candidates in accordance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Training Standards Commission.
- Prepares criminal investigations for court proceedings and testifies in court proceedings.
- Maintains all criminal related evidence and property in compliance with state mandated standards and applicable state and federal law.
- Conducts internal investigations involving security and police personnel. Investigates all incidents (to include civil, criminal, external and proprietary investigations).
- Assists with presentations, programs and security audits and inspections of Atrium Health properties.
- Develops and delivers security related programs and presentations to assist in the protection of persons and property at Atrium Health. This includes newsletters, crime trend analysis, training modules and specialized security and law enforcement related programs for specific personnel
- Recommends promotion/demotion, hiring, discipline and corrective action
- Provides input on performance evaluations for teammates
- Recommends/provides input on budget accountability and policy development

- Must be able to communicate effectively and clearly, in both oral and written form..
- Ability to run, and exert intense physical effort in moving, controlling, or restraining combative subjects.
- Possess close and intermediate visual acuity.
- Spends majority of time standing or walking with a reasonable amount of bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
- May be exposed to unfavorable weather conditions.
- Exposed to hazardous work conditions and combative subjects.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- License/Registration/Certification: General Law Enforcement Certification
- Issued by (Governing Body): NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards (or ability to transfer laterally)
- Level of Education: Associates Degree (required). Bachelor Degree (preferred).
- Field of Study (if applicable): Criminal Justice
- Years of Experience: 6
- Describe Type Experience: 6 years' experience as a Law Enforcement Officer (required)
- Demonstrated teaching aptitude, presentation skills.
- NC General Instructor Certification
- NC Specialized Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor Certification
- Advanced Law Enforcement Certification (preferred)
- Maintains advanced knowledge of law enforcement and Atrium Health methods, practices, and procedures.
- Demonstrate proficiency with a firearm to meet Atrium Health and North Carolina standards.
- Ability to meet and maintain minimum standards for NC General Law Enforcement Certification
- Valid Driver's license
- Ability to pass rigorous background check, polygraph and/or psychological testing.
- Ability to pass Atrium Health mandated Taser, CPI, and self-defense training.
