Job Summary

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit provides highly specialized, round-the-clock care for newborns, babies and children who are critically ill with a heart condition. As one of the few pediatric intensive care units in the nation dedicated to heart conditions, we offer a level of care not available at many other children's hospitals. This focus and expertise leads to better outcomes for our young patients.

Department Description

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) is an 18 bed unit that specializes in the care of children with complex congenital cardiac disease. Surgical procedures include repair of congenital heart defects and permanent pacemaker insertion. Medical interventions include management of acute/chronic heart failure, septic shock, renal and respiratory failure. Critically ill children are cared for with such treatment modalities as mechanical ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, ventricular assist devices, temporary pacemaker therapy, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and acute hemodialysis.

Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner 1
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as an RN in pediatric critical care or pediatric cardiology
  • Master's degree in Nursing with a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specialization
  • Demonstration of advanced interpersonal skills while working with families of acutely and critically ill children
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Dedication to patient care
  • Ability to critically think and problem solve
Nurse Practitioner 2
  • Minimum of six (6) months NP experience in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU, or Peds critical care
  • Master's degree in Nursing with a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specialization
  • Demonstration of advanced interpersonal skills while working with families of acutely and critically ill children
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Dedication to patient care
  • Ability to critically think and problem solve

Preferred Qualifications


  • Three (3) years experience as an NP in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU.

License/Certification


  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.

  • Current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Complete a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Current AHA BLS.
  • Current AHA PALS.
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
