As a Product Development Chemist, you will work with plant engineers on manufacturing of intermediates and finished goods.You'll intelligently apply your formulation expertise in an environment that encourages your growth. You will contribute to new product development, color and other formula design, product preparation and application, and the testing of coatings against different specifications and requirements.

PPG Industrial Coatings produces coatings for appliances, agricultural and construction equipment, electronic materials, automotive parts, residential and commercial construction, wood flooring and many other finished products. Located in Springdale, PA (Pittsburgh, PA suburb), the position will report to the Technical Supervisor of Extrusion, Building Products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product Development Activities

    • Plan and conduct experimental work (coatings formulation, application, testing) based on the need for performance improvements, process improvements, or application improvements as communicated by both sales and field service individuals.

    • Formulate coatings for aluminum substrates in PVDF, Acrylic, and Polyester technologies.

    • Analyze and interpret experimental results to facilitate new product development.

    • Identify replacement materials in existing products for raw materials with chemical restrictions or obsoleted raw materials. Ensure that raw material replacements have no impact to the customer.

    • Communicate and ensure recordkeeping through written/verbal summaries, reports, and presentations to both internal and external customers.

    Manufacturing Support Activities

    • Work closely with plant engineers on manufacturing of intermediates and finished goods.

    • Support manufacturing of all Extrusion products including first time make batches and quality holds/troubleshooting.

    Technical Service Support Activities

    • Provide samples to customers either as sprayed parts or as wet samples by retrieving raw materials, preparing samples, QC testing, filling, labeling and shipping samples.

    • Handling customer questions/concerns and address any customer complaints. Provide Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet information on products when requested.

    • Visit new and existing customers for product trials or line application issues.

    Safety/5S/Admin Activities

    • Maintain a safe and organized laboratory by purging of old raw materials and establishing 5S standards.

    • Knowledge of Product Stewardship and EHS steps needed during Product Development to insure new products meet requirements and keep PPG manufacturing teams and PPG customers safe when using PPG products.

Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in a technical/engineering field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Coatings Science, or Chemical Engineering.

  • 3+ years of laboratory experience.

  • Prior knowledge of spray applied solvent-borne coatings
