Position Summary: A full-time position at the Researcher 3 level is being offered at the University of Minnesota - Saint Paul, Campus. We are seeking a self-motivated and meticulously organized individual to join our research team. This position provides scientific and technical support for manure nutrient management and water quality research. This individual will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) of the research team and assist with all aspects of research, but will primarily lead small-plot research in the field and greenhouse research. The expected start date is October through December 2024 and salary will be commensurate with experience. This will be a continuing appointment dependent upon funding and job performance.

Job Duties:
* 50% Perform small-plot experiments in the field, greenhouse, and/or in the lab, including multi-step experimental analyses on various instruments and equipment; record all experimental protocols and data; organize and interpret experimental results; be able to prioritize multiple tasks based on complexity and time-sensitivity.
* 15% Confer with other lab/field personnel in drafting work schedules and plans for execution of the more complex field, greenhouse, and/or laboratory studies, including on-farm experiments. Hire and oversee undergraduate researchers in collaboration with other lab/field personnel.
* 10% Organize and manage samples in conjunction with other lab/field personnel to ensure proper protocols are followed for timely and efficient preservation, analysis, and storage.
* 10% Test experimental techniques and modify or develop new protocols; adapt field and laboratory equipment as needed for research projects; oversee the use of field and laboratory equipment and train personnel/volunteers on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
* 5% Investigate and evaluate vendors and products. Order and maintain field and laboratory supplies and equipment. Keep detailed ordering budgetary records which apply to specific grants.
* 5% Assist in designing research projects based on knowledge of the field and literature reviews
* 5% Perform everyday tasks such as equipment cleanup and vehicle maintenance. Maintain field and lab safety documentation.

Travel
* This position requires frequent travel within the state, and occasionally outside of it.
* There may be work evenings, occasional overnight, and/or weekends, particularly during the growing season.
* This person must have a valid driver's license and access to use of a cell phone for work purposes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: BS/BA degree in soil science, agronomy, agricultural engineering, environmental science, or a related discipline in the agricultural sciences and 2 years of related research experience or a combination of related education and relevant work experience to equal six (6) years.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience operating farm equipment, particularly tractors and manure application equipment
* Understanding of scientific research principals, such as experimental design
* Experience with livestock systems and/or animal manure
* Experience with collecting and analyzing samples in field and laboratory settings

This position is in the Wilson Lab in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate in CFANS on the St. Paul, MN campus of the University of Minnesota.
