JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Research and Development Engineer to join our Supply Chain Engineering Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). The Supply Chain Engineering Department develops and evaluates: data models enabling efficient logistics modeling and risk analysis; mathematical models and simulations to optimize processes and policies; new technologies to improve visibility, tracking, verification, and automation; data analyses to summarize past logistics performance and inform future decisions; and artificial intelligence techniques enabling predictive logistics. We are seeking a self-motivated, analytic thinker to develop front and back-end software for intelligent logistics decision making, automated data management, and visual communication of information. This position will work with other scientists and engineers to integrate components into prototype capabilities that can be demonstrated to research sponsors and transitioned for use by DoD.

You will:

  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems
  • Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve various engineering systems; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer/grantor needs
  • Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes
  • Conduct experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technical areas; may include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling, and processing data; may include planning/designing experiments or tests and supervising the execution thereof
  • Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, papers, or oral/written presentations
  • Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members, engineers, and scientists to accomplish organizational goals; provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Must be skilled in Java, Python, and JavaScript languages
  • Must be skilled in working with relational, NoSQL, and graph databases
  • Must be able to apply concepts from Mathematics and Statistics
  • Must have previous success with collaborations in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture
  • Must have past success in providing ideas in written form for clear comprehension to an audience

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Experience in developing simulations
  • Experience in mathematical optimization modeling

Security Clearance Preferred:

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required.

Your working location will be fully on-site or project-dependent hybrid on-site/work from home in State College, PA. This position may require periodic travel to remote locations to meet with research sponsors or conduct field testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

**The proposed salary range may be impacted by geographic differential.**

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$76,700.00 - $115,100.00
