Research Review Coordinator

The Research Review Coordinator (RRC) works as part of a multi-disciplinary team, under the auspices of the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board. The Research Review Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a current working knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to the responsible conduct of human subjects research, along with ensuring compliance with University of Pittsburgh policies and procedures.

The Research Review Coordinator will conduct a thorough review of exempt and expedited studies and will complete all necessary documentation in the online submission database. When appropriate, the RRC may facilitate discussions with principal investigators and research coordinators to ensure that risks to human subjects are minimized and that research is conducted in accordance with federal and state regulations and university policies and procedures.

The RRC will also be responsible for independent review of minimal risk studies and will complete all necessary documentation in the online submission database.

As part of a service-oriented outreach program, the RRC will provide consultation and training to members of the research community at large and provide on-site education to University groups upon request.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for this position, as the RRC must personally and electronically communicate with members of the research community on a regular basis.

This position is open to a flexible work arrangement which includes in-office and hybrid options.


Job Summary

Ensures research is conducted in compliance with federal and state regulations and University policies and procedures. Reviews and evaluates data monitoring and maintenance systems, coordinates the collection and dissemination of project-related data, and recommends modifications to ensure accuracy.


Essential Functions
  • Protocol Review:
    Will be responsible for independently reviewing research protocols submitted by the research community
  • Consultations:
    Will be responsible for answering general questions and providing basic consultation regarding the submission process to principal investigators and research coordinators
  • Educational Programs:
    Will be responsible for providing education sessions for the research community and participating in staff development programs to acquire the knowledge necessary to conduct qualitative protocol reviews
  • Special Projects:
    The employee must demonstrate the ability to assume special assignments not otherwise described, as determined by HRP management

Little physical effort is required. Job is primarily sedentary.
